UK deer-head measuring

How BASC head measuring works.

BASC runs a UK head-measuring service with the British Deer Society and Shooting Times. It records individual heads and the wider patterns that emerge when results are collected across the country.

Why BASC measures heads

BASC says it records hundreds of heads across the six deer species found in the UK to map trends in different counties. The service also supports deer management by showing how mature animals are developing in different places.

That makes the result more than a decorative number. A head measurement sits alongside the species, place, date and wider picture of a managed deer population. It is still a record of one individual animal, and that is what works well on a personal print.

What is measured

SpeciesBASC says its service measures all six UK deer species, plus feral boar and goats.
Species differencesEach species has its own method. BASC describes roe as favouring dark, thick, heavy heads, while sika, Chinese water deer and muntjac need length and symmetry. Fallow is assessed for height, width and palmation.
ContextThe service can be found at shows and events, where BASC's deer team and volunteers explain the process.
Certificate or medalOnly call a result a BASC certificate or medal if you received that documentation. The poster is a separate personal record.

How to record a BASC-measured head on a poster

Select BASC, copy the measured result from your paperwork, and add the species, harvest date and a location label that you are comfortable putting on the wall. A clear photograph of the animal, head or finished mount helps the print carry the story without showing private certificates.

For a UK deer head that has also been formally assessed under CIC, use the method on the document you want the poster to record. A BASC measurement session and a CIC result may be related, but they are not the same label.

Frequently asked questions

Does BASC measure every deer species?

BASC says its service covers the six deer species found in the UK, along with feral boar and goats. Contact BASC for current availability and event details.

Can I use a BASC result for an overseas trophy?

Usually no. BASC head measuring is aimed at UK deer management. For a European or international trophy, choose the system shown on the official score record, such as CIC or SCI.
